For the better part of ten months Tesla didn’t deliver a single brand new Model X after shutting down and retooling the production lines in December 2020 for the refresh design.
Even since the first deliveries in October 2021, there has still not been a delivery of the premium electric SUV in Canada, making it 14 straight months with no new Model X SUVs north of the border.
If Elon Musk could do it all over again, he would take a very different approach.
In a series of tweets on Wednesday, the CEO admitted shutting down the production line was a mistake, saying they “dropped the ball” on the production ramp and more than a year later “still haven’t fully recovered.”
We dropped the ball badly regarding new Model X production ramp & still haven’t fully recovered. Was idiotic to stop production of old X in Dec 2020 when there was still plenty of demand!

One of the reasons production hasn’t fully ramped is out of their control.
According to Musk, there is a shortage of interior trim pieces, which is the likely reason we have seen Model X SUVs piling up at the Fremont factory in recent drone flyovers.
Musk didn’t provide a timeline for when he thinks the problems will ease, but even if all the trim pieces were arrive today, it will still take a while to work through the current backlog of orders.
According to the Design Studio, new orders placed today won’t arrive until January 2023 for the Long Range or October 2022 for the Plaid.
