China’s Xpeng reveals new G9 electric SUV

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker Xpeng has added to its lineup, announcing a new G9 electric SUV at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition on Friday.

The G9 is the company’s fourth vehicle, and will take on the Tesla Model Y, Nio ES6, and Li One from Li Auto.

Xpeng is planning to sell the G9 in China in first, and in international markets later. The company did not reveal timelines for its launch, but sources familiar with the plans told CNBC it should debut in the third quarter of 2022.

“G9 is our first model to be conceived and developed from the ground up for both the international and Chinese markets, bringing our most sophisticated designs to our customers worldwide,” Xpeng Co-Founder Henry Xia said in a press release.

According to details announced in a press release, the G9 will be the first to be equipped with Xpilot 4.0, Xpeng’s advanced driver-assistance system powered by LiDAR and Nvidia’s Orin-X chip.

The electric SUV will also be compatible with the company’s X-Power superchargers, which can add 200km (124 miles) of range in 5 minutes.

Xpeng currently has a network of 550 branded supercharging stations and 1,734 free supercharging stations across China.

Details on pricing, battery size, and driving range, were not announced.
