Tesla works around state law to launch direct sales and service in New Mexico

There are still ten states in the US that ban Tesla and other EV makers from selling direct to consumers and from operating a service center. One of those states is New Mexico, and while they haven’t changed their law, Tesla has found a way to operate within the state.

Noted as the first deal of its kind, Tesla has opened a new Sales, Service and Delivery Center on tribal land in Nambé Pueblo. Since it is on tribal land, that means the facility is not subject to state law and can offers services within its borders.

The ceremonial opening of the new facility held yesterday was attended by leaders of the Nambé Pueblo nation, as well as U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich who said the deal will bring economic opportunities to Tribal communities.

“I can’t wait to see how Tesla and the Pueblo will build on this partnership in the months and years ahead to train workers and employees for good-paying, long-term careers right here in Nambé,”said Heinrich.

Tesla’s new facility is located at the Nambé Falls Travel Center in a building that used be a casino. The site features two service bays, a wash bay, and a showroom with a single car.

Perspective owners can also take a test drive out of the new location.

There are currently 1,864 Tesla vehicles registered in the state, all of which will no longer have to travel to neighbouring Colorado, Texas, or Arizona for service.
