During Tesla’s AI Day yesterday, CEO Elon Musk revealed the company plans to launch its next generation Full Self-Driving (FSD) computer with the Cybertruck next year.
Referred to as Hardware 4 of Full Self-Driving Computer 2 by Musk, the computer would replace the current HW3.0 computer, which was first unveiled in 2019.
Musk made the announcement when asked by an attendee at the event when an upgrade to HW3.0 would be required, if at all.
“Obviously, there will be a future Hardware 4, or Full Self Driving Computer 2, which we’ll probably introduce with the Cybertruck, so maybe in about a year or so.”
According to Musk, the new computer will be roughly “four times more capable” than the current hardware.
In recent months many have been questioning whether the current HW3.0 would be capable of running the FSD software when it finally arrives. Many of those people took this as an admission that it won’t be able to, but Musk likened the new hardware to how some humans are better drivers than others.
“But it’s really just gonna be like, can we take it from, say, for argument’s sake, 300% safer than a person to 1,000% safer. And just like there are people on the road who have varying driving abilities, but we still let people drive. You don’t have to be the world’s best driver to be on the road.”Â
Even though Musk said the new computer would launch with the Cybertruck “in about a year or so,” that doesn’t mean the Cybertruck has been delayed until late 2022. The electric truck will likely instead launch with the current HW3.0, and later switch to HW4 when it is ready.
There has been no word on whether there will be an upgrade program, free or otherwise, for current FSD owners with HW3.0.
