Tesla is plugging into the Texas power grid with big battery

Tesla subsidiary Gambit Energy Storage LLC is building a 100-megawatt battery storage project 40 miles outside of Houston. The project is in Angleton, Texas, and is already under construction.

Initially developed by Plus Power, a San-Francisco-based company, the Angleton project was purchased by an undisclosed party, reports Bloomberg.  The battery would have enough energy to power 20,000 homes on a hot summer day, as per filings. Registered with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) the project will plug directly into the ERCOT grid. According to filings, the project will go live on June 1, 2021.

This is not the first foray into commercial power for Tesla and its subsidiaries in the United States. Tesla has a 20-megawatt system in Los Angeles which has been in operation since 2016. Another 182.5 MW project in coordination with PPG in the San Francisco area will launch in August 2021.

Tesla also operates a 150 MW Hornsdale battery project in South Australia which has been operational since 2017.

According to the former city manager of Angleton, Scott Albert, Musk may be developing his own power company. There is undoubtedly more to come for Tesla Energy; the question is, do they become their own power company or keep supporting the existing infrastructure?
