Hyundai Canada recalls nearly 11,000 Kona and Nexo EVs

For the second time this year, Hyundai has issued a recall for the Kona electric vehicle (EV) in Canada, and this time it impacts the Nexo fuel cell EV as well.

According to Transport Canada Recall # 2020-593, an abnormal sensor signal to the Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB) system can cause a sudden reduction in braking performance, leading to extended stopping distances and increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall impacts both the Kona EV and NEXO model years 2019, 2020, and 2021, totalling 10,794 units in Canada. A similar recall has been issued in the US, with the NHTSA recalling 8,176 cars.

According to Hyundai, the fix is a simple software update. Since the automaker doesn’t offer over-the-air (OTA) software updates, Hyundai will notify owners by mail with instructions to take the vehicle to a local dealership.
