Tesla is improving the sound systems in some of its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China with a new in-house audio algorithm. The upgrade will be free and delivered through an over-the-air (OTA) software update to existing owners.
Announced through Tesla’s official Weibo account in China, the feature is designed to turn standard two-channel audio into a more immersive, 360-degree listening experience.
Instead of simply sending the same stereo signal through additional speakers, Tesla’s algorithm separates different elements within a track and assigns them positions inside the cabin. Direct sounds are directed primarily toward the front occupants, while ambient elements are distributed through the side and rear speakers to create a surround-sound effect.

Not every Model 3 and Model Y will receive the new feature. For the Model 3, it will only be available on Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and Performance variants produced from September 2023 onward. For Model Y, owners of Long Range AWD and Model Y Performance variants built after February 2025 can expect to receive the update.
This new audio upgrade is the same “Immersive Sound X” already available on the Model Y L.
For now, Tesla has only announced the upgrade specifically for the Chinese market. The company has not said whether the same feature will be released in Canada or the U.S.
