Starlink Changes Roam Plans With Big Boost for Canada-US Travelers

Starlink customers in Canada and the United States are getting a welcome change as part of a broader overhaul to the satellite internet provider’s Roam plans. Beginning August 17, the two countries will be treated as a single travel region, allowing customers to use their service seamlessly on either side of the border without it counting as international travel.

For many Canadian and American users, the change simplifies cross-border travel. Whether you’re taking an RV through the Rockies, working remotely from another province or state, or spending time south of the border for the winter, your Starlink connection can continue to work without requiring an international travel upgrade.

The update is part of revised Roam Terms of Service that SpaceX has begun rolling out to customers ahead of the policy taking effect.

Cheaper Roam plans lose global travel

However, the changes also introduce new limits for customers on Starlink’s lower-cost Roam plans.

According to the updated terms, “All other Roam plans: Use anywhere within your registered home country. US and Canada are treated as one country. International use requires an upgrade to Roam Unlimited, which you can do anytime from your account. Alternatively, you can localize your account to a new country.”

That means subscribers on Roam 100GB and Roam 300GB plans will no longer have access to worldwide roaming as they previously did. Travel beyond the combined Canada-US region will now require an upgrade to the Roam Unlimited plan or a transfer of the account to another country.

Roam Unlimited also sees new limits

Roam Unlimited also sees a change. While it continues to support international travel, customers are now limited to 30 consecutive days outside their registered home region before needing to either return home, localize their account, or move to a higher-tier Priority plan. Previously, the allowance was up to 60 days.

Starlink has also confirmed it is discontinuing its Global Roam plan, with existing subscribers required to transition to another plan before August 17.

A trade-off for frequent travelers

For North American customers, the policy changes represent a mix of new restrictions and added convenience. International flexibility has been reduced on the more affordable Roam plans, but the decision to combine Canada and the United States into a single operating region should be a welcome improvement for the many Starlink users who regularly travel across the border.
