Tesla’s Giga Shanghai produces 5 millionth battery pack

Tesla has reached another major manufacturing milestone in China, announcing the production of the 5 millionth battery pack at Giga Shanghai. The achievement highlights the continued scale and efficiency of Tesla’s largest factory outside the United States — and one of the most productive automotive plants in the world.

Located in the Lin-gang Special Area of Shanghai, the factory began operations in late 2019 and has since become a cornerstone of Tesla’s global supply chain. The massive factory produces both Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for the Chinese market as well as exports to dozens of international markets across Europe, Asia, and beyond.

Canada was also part of Giga Shanghai’s export network for a brief period until the federal government imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese-made vehicles, a tariff the government is now reportedly considering to remove.

The 5-million-pack milestone, announced on the company’s official Weibo account in China, follows a series of record-setting achievements for the Shanghai facility. In July 2024, Tesla celebrated producing its 10 millionth drive unit at the same site. By November 2024, Giga Shanghai had built its three millionth vehicle and exported one million units overseas.

These numbers illustrate the plant’s massive contribution to Tesla’s global output. In 2024 alone, Giga Shanghai delivered more than 916,000 vehicles, accounting for roughly half of Tesla’s total worldwide deliveries. The site’s combination of advanced automation, localized supply chains, and production agility continues to set the standard for Tesla’s operations worldwide.

Most recently, the company said it is ramping up production at Giga Shanghai during the third quarter to meet increased demand for its vehicles, including its export markets.

The factory also recently started producing several new variants of the Model Y and Model 3, including the six-seater Model Y L, and the Model Y + and Model 3+, both of which come with over 803km of CLTC-rated range.
