Tesla Extends Free FSD Transfer Program Into Q4

Tesla has extended its popular Full Self-Driving (Supervised) transfer program into the final quarter of 2025, giving owners in North America, Europe, and the Middle East more time to upgrade to a new vehicle without losing their investment in the company’s most advanced driver-assistance software.

The FSD transfer program allows owners who previously purchased the FSD package, currently priced at $11,000 in Canada and $8,000 in the U.S., but was once as high as C$21,000/US$15,000, to move that software to a new Tesla at no additional cost.

Once transferred, the original vehicle reverts to basic Autopilot functionality, while the new vehicle gains access to all of Tesla’s FSD features.

A Program That Was Never Meant to Last

Tesla first introduced FSD transfers in North America during the third quarter of 2023 as a one-time “amnesty,” after CEO Elon Musk agreed to repeated owner requests for a way to preserve their FSD purchase when upgrading. At the time, Musk said the offer would end after Q3. But due to strong demand, Tesla has quietly continued to extend it every few months, often coinciding with quarterly delivery pushes.

By early 2024, the company reintroduced the perk for new deliveries through March 31, later extending it again through mid-year. The latest extension, confirmed on Tesla’s website, keeps the program going, but if it is to be believed, only for “a limited time.”

Rewarding Long-Time Owners?

While the FSD transfer offer is framed as a loyalty incentive, it is more than likely being extended to reduce the company’s future liabilities.

By encouraging FSD owners with older Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicles to upgrade instead of waiting for a promised retrofit, Tesla effectively reduces its own future costs and accelerates the adoption of HW4-equipped cars. Offering a free transfer helps smooth that process, making it easier for long-time owners to move into a new vehicle that’s fully compatible with the latest versions of FSD (Supervised).

Even though the program is now available through the end of 2025, Tesla will likely continue it beyond that date, possibly until the retrofit becomes available.
