Ford is delaying its new electric pickup and van to focus on smaller EVs

Ford confirmed that they are planning to delay both of their next-generation electric pickup (Project T3) and electric van (E-Transit replacement) to 2028 to focus on new smaller EVs.

Project T3 is an all-new full-size electric pickup which was supposed to debut this year. It is meant to replace the current-generation F-150 Lightning and was delayed to 2027 before this latest pushback. At the same time, the next-generation electric van that will replace the E-Transit has also been delayed and was initially announced in 2022 to debut mid-decade.

The decision to delay these next-generation electric vehicles was not due to finances or concern over development. Instead, Ford wants to focus on smaller and more affordable EVs in the North American market. Last year, Ford revealed their “skunkworks” project to develop low-cost EVs, and it looks like this is the focus for the rest of 2025 and into 2026/27.

The good news is that we will most likely not need to wait for too long to find out more about Ford’s plans. Ford has an announcement scheduled on August 11, with few details provided. However, many in the auto sector believe the American automaker will announce the “Ranchero”, an EV version of the Ranger with a lower body or another new smaller EV in a couple of days.
