Tesla is now offering an insurance discount to drivers who frequently use Full Self-Driving (Supervised). The new discount, available through Tesla Insurance, applies to owners who have purchased or subscribed to FSD (Supervised) and drive a significant portion of their miles using the system.
The FSD discount was first hinted at in a recent update to the mobile app, and over the weekend the new program went live, but only in two of the twelve states where Tesla Insurance is offered.
How the Discount Works
According to the terms of the program, Tesla Insurance customers in Texas and Arizona who use FSD (Supervised) for at least 50% of their total driven miles can earn up to a 10% discount on specific coverages in their insurance premium, rewarding customers who frequently use Tesla’s self-driving technology.
Data Collection and Discount Calculation
Tesla Insurance will automatically track relevant driving data through the vehicle’s built-in telemetry system. The company will collect two key metrics from vehicles enrolled in the program:
- Total miles driven
- Total miles driven with FSD (Supervised) enabled
Each month, Tesla Insurance will calculate the percentage of miles driven with FSD (Supervised) enabled by dividing the total miles driven with the system by the total miles driven in the last 30-day period. If at least 50% of a driver’s miles were completed using FSD (Supervised), they will qualify for up to a 10% discount on their monthly premium.
Benefits for Tesla & the Customer
While this is a good move for Tesla Insurance customers with FSD (Supervised), there are also benefits for Tesla. By offering an insurance incentive, the company is encouraging drivers to rely more on the software.
This expanded use provides Tesla with additional insights into how its FSD system performs under various driving conditions, adding to the more than 3 billion cumulative miles already driven on FSD.
As of now, the FSD (Supervised) insurance discount is only available to Tesla Insurance customers in Texas and Arizona. However, given Tesla’s history of expanding its insurance offerings, it is likely only a matter of time until this program rolls out to additional states in the future.
