Tesla completed their latest factory, Giga Shanghai, in record time, going from mud field to manufacturing in just ten months.
Now the automaker is set to achieve its mid-year Model 3 production goal on time, based on recent comments by Tesla China VP Tao Lin.
In a recent interview with Xinhua, Lin said Tesla’s production goal of 4,000 units per week by mid-2020 will be met by June 2020, a number which would exceed the design capacity of the first stage of the factory.
“Tao Lin said that the factory is currently producing smoothly, and it is expected that the target of 4,000 vehicles per week will be achieved in June this year, which means that the actual output will exceed the design capacity of the first-stage super factory with an annual output of 150,000 units.“
In addition to the Model 3 production goal, Lin also revealed details about upcoming Model Y production at the plant. With construction of phase 2 of the factory well underway and expected to be complete by the end of the year, Lin said the Model Y will begin production in Q1 2021.
These kinds of production numbers would push Tesla to be producing over its initial targets for Giga Shanghai. Plans initially called for production fo up to 150,000 units per year. At the current rate of 4,000 units per week, that would put production at the plant at 200,000 units per year, before Model Y production is considered.
