SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne sees COVID-19 outbreak

A COVID-19 outbreak at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne is among several Los Angeles County COVID-19 workplace outbreaks.

However, the SpaceX outbreak, with 132 impacted workers is the most significant outbreak; next in line is the FedEx facility near Los Angeles International Airport, with 85 cases.

The complete list of workplaces with COVID-19 outbreaks total 37 companies with 452 cases. Los Angeles County did not confirm if any infections are the newer and more infectious Omicron variant or Delta variant.

SpaceX’s Hawthorne facility serves as its headquarters, mission control and manufacturing space for their Falcon 9 rockets.

The company is in the middle of a busy portion of its season. Last month, SpaceX successfully launched a NASA mission to smash into an asteroid. The mission was a test to see if it could knock an asteroid off a collision course toward Earth.

California is going through yet another wave of COVID-19. Los Angeles County saw their highest number of daily cases since August this week.

Omicron is now the dominant strain of the coronavirus in the region. Hospitals are strained once again, and this is on the eve of the holiday season as family gatherings and air travel ramp up.

SpaceX did not respond to a request for comment from ABC7 News.
