Alpin Sun, a European based company with the goal to bring sustainable, low cost renewable energy to most parts of the world, is currently in negotiations with the airport to install a 627-acre, 120MW solar farm.

It’s a great opportunity to drive economic development as well as be better for the environment,” Myron Keehn, vice-president, commercial development and air service at EIA, told CBC.

The massive project, which would be bigger than 300 CFL football fields, is proposed to be located on the west side of the airport, on what is currently a canola field.

If an agreement is reached, the project is expected to begin construction in early 2022, with the targeted completion by the end of that year.

Once complete, it will consist of approximately 340,000 solar panes, and produce enough electricity to power up to 28,000 homes.

Alpin Sun estimates that annual production of 200,000 MWh will result in an annual offset of an estimated 106,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
