As a consolation for missing the deadline to have Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature complete by the end of 2019, Tesla added the option for drivers to enable the Full Self-Driving (FSD) visualization preview.
This option gives drivers a better glimpse into what the cameras and sensors on the cars can actually see, like road markings and traffic lights and signs.
Over the years the driving visualizations have improved significantly, and with Tesla’s latest software update that started pushing out yesterday, 2020.16.2, they have improved them even more.
Prior to this update, when a pedestrian crossed in front of your car, they appeared to be hovering on the street, and gliding across it as if they were on a skateboard. They also always faced your vehicle (or did they have their backs to us?), and didn’t face their direction of travel.
With the latest update, Elon Musk has given life to the pedestrians, who now have working legs and will actually walk across the screen while facing the right direction.
The new visualizations were first discovered by Julian on YouTube, who came up with a clever way to test his vehicle after the update without ever leaving his garage by setting up a projector and loading a dashcam video from YouTube.
Tesla has certainly come a long way in a relatively short period of time with their driving visualizations. It was only a little over 6 months ago that they released the visualizations for traffic cones, something which amazed and excited Tesla owners. Now with road markings, stop signs and traffic lights, traffic cones seem like child’s play.
