Tesla’s Model Y has fans even among the company’s rivals. As revealed by the CEO, Xiaomi was among the buyers of the electric SUV as the Chinese EV maker sought to improve its own wares.
Xiaomi boss Lei Jun confirmed the purchase of three Tesla Model Ys to reveal the secret sauce to making a best-selling electric car. Lei stated this at the Beijing National Convention Center this week, explaining that his employees tore down the cars to examine each component.
The Chinese businessman was full of praise for the Model Y and even compared it directly to his own YU7 SUV. Lei said, “We bought 3 Model Ys at the start of this year, disassembling the parts one by one, and studied every component, one at a time… If you don’t choose the YU7, you might consider the Model Y… The Model Y is an exceptionally impressive car.”
This was not the first time Lei spoke positively about the Tesla Model Y. He previously recommended the EV after Xiaomi was overwhelmed with demand for the YU7, which secured 200,000 orders in just three minutes. The Chinese SUV has a wait time of more than 56 weeks.
The YU7 boasts a DC fast charging time to 80 percent of just 13 minutes, compared to 18 minutes for the Model Y.
