Waymo to expand robotaxi fleet with 2,000 more Jaguar I-Pace EVs from new Arizona facility

Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving technology division, is significantly expanding its autonomous vehicle fleet, announcing plans to add over 2,000 Jaguar I-Pace electric vehicles (EVs) by the end of 2026. The new vehicles will be outfitted at the company’s recently opened 239,000-square-foot “Waymo Driver Integration Plant” in Mesa, Arizona, operated in partnership with Canadian automotive supplier Magna International.

Waymo says the Mesa facility, which began ramping up operations last fall, will be capable of producing tens of thousands of autonomous vehicles annually once fully scaled. In addition to the Jaguar I-Pace, the company will begin integrating its sixth-generation Waymo Driver system into the Chinese-built Zeekr RT robotaxi platform later this year.

This expansion will more than double the number of Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in Waymo’s current fleet, which already includes around 1,500 of the EVs. The vehicles will be added despite Jaguar discontinuing the I-Pace from its consumer lineup in 2024.

Unlike Tesla, which uses a vision-based approach relying solely on cameras, Waymo’s vehicles utilize a sensor suite that includes lidar, radar, and cameras. Currently, Waymo is averaging more than 250,000 paid rides per week across its operational cities.

The company plans to launch additional service in Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C., by 2026. The company is also expanding internationally, launching services in Tokyo this year.
