Volkswagen electric vehicle (EV) owners in North America will gain significant charging flexibility this summer, with the automaker confirming its EVs will have access to Tesla’s Supercharger network by June 2025.
Mark Gillies, Director of Public Relations at VW Group of America, announced the rollout during CES 2025 in Las Vegas.
“We get access to the network in June/July, when we have an official VW adapter,” Gillies stated at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on Monday. (via PC Mag)
This move places Volkswagen alongside other major automakers such as Ford, General Motors, Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, and Nissan, all of which already have access to Tesla’s network. According to Tesla’s website, Mercedes-Benz should be the next automaker to get Supercharger access, although official timing of that expansion has not been announced.
Volkswagen’s path to Supercharger integration was slower than most competitors, likely due to its ownership stake in Electrify America, a competing charging network. The company was one of the last major players to adopt the NACS standard, officially signing on in December 2023.
Volkswagen is actively sourcing suppliers and approving manufacturers for these adapters, though Gillies acknowledged that third-party adapters, such as those from A2Z, are already available. Until new VW EV models are built with native NACS ports, which is not expected until 2026, drivers will need to rely on adapters to use Tesla Superchargers.
Volkswagen has yet to disclose pricing for its adapter, but based on what other automakers have been doing, they could be provided for free, like what Rivian did, or cost somewhere around C$300/US$230.
