Volkswagen wants to produce an affordable EV but is pushing the production ramp-up further down the road. The German automaker will make most interested buyers wait until 2026, when it will boost the production of the ID.2.
The 25,000 euros EV was revealed as the ID.2all concept last year. While Volkswagen plans to make a production version, it won’t do so in numbers until 2026, even though the official reveal will take place in the fall of 2025, according to Auto, Motor, Sport’s reporting.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen is not the only automaker promising a sub-25,000 euros EV. The ID.2 will face competition from Citroen with the e-C3, which would be about 2,000 euros cheaper. Renault is also launching the R5 at the end of this year. The battery-powered Twingo will even go on sale for under 20,000 euros from next year. These are apart from cheaper EV models coming from China and earlier than 2026. Volkswagen will have to find a strategy to deal with the head-start after delaying the ID.2.
It is speculated that Volkswagen may offer a sub-20,000 euro EV, the ID.1, in conjunction with Renault.
