Tesla’s Giga Shanghai will be seeing a leadership change as Song Gang, the factory’s head and a key figure in its construction and operation, will be stepping down this week.
While Tesla has not publicly commented on Song’s departure, it is believed that Fei Wenjin, previously the director of quality and recently promoted to senior director, will temporarily assume Song’s responsibilities, according to a report from local Chinese media outlet Latepost.
Song’s LinkedIn profile, which now lists him as “ex-Tesla,” highlights his extensive experience, including time spent at General Motors and Ford.
Song Gang joined Tesla in December 2018 as the first employee of Giga Shanghai, overseeing its development from groundbreaking to full production. Under his leadership, the factory became Tesla’s largest production facility, with an annual capacity of approximately 1 million vehicles. The factory produces the Model 3 and Model Y for both the domestic market and international exports.
“As the No. 1 employee in Telsa GFSH, I have built up the world No. 1 vehicle factory, Battery factory and Drive Unit factory,” Song writes in his LinkedIn profile.
Beyond vehicles, Song was also behind Tesla’s energy storage expansion in China, playing a key role in developing the Megafactory in Shanghai, Tesla’s first energy storage facility outside the US. This new plant, expected to begin operations in Q1 2025, will have the capacity to produce up to 10,000 Megapack units annually, matching the output of the Lathrop Megafactory in California.
