Tesla’s China Sales Surge in September, Marking Strong Quarterly Growth

Tesla continues to make impressive strides in the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market, as September 2024 saw a remarkable increase in sales of vehicles made at Giga Shanghai. According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla sold 88,321 vehicles last month, a significant 19.24% increase compared to the same time last year.

This sales figure is the highest since March, showcasing the growing demand for Tesla’s vehicles in China, as well as abroad, where its Shanghai-produced cars are exported to markets across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Tesla also used to export cars to Canada, but no longer does after the Canadian government imposed 100% tariffs on Chinese-made EVs.

This strong performance comes despite an overall decline in year-on-year sales through the first nine months of 2024. However, the third quarter brought a notable turnaround, with Tesla China recording sales of 249,135 vehicles, an 11.96% increase year-on-year.

This contributed nearly 54% to Tesla’s global deliveries of 462,890 vehicles during the quarter, highlighting the importance of Tesla’s Shanghai factory in its global production strategy.

In late September, Tesla celebrated a significant milestone – reaching 1 million exported vehicles from China, cementing the factory’s status as a global export hub. Tesla’s production strategy at Giga Shanghai prioritizing exports early in the quarter, followed by focusing on domestic deliveries later.
