Tesla to expand custom wrap & license plate visualizations to S3XY models, but not everyone may get it

Tesla has officially confirmed that its upcoming feature allowing custom wraps and license plate visualizations will not be exclusive to the Cybertruck.

Originally slated for the Cybertruck as part of the 2024 Holiday Update, Tesla’s official Cybertruck account on X said yesterday this feature will expand to the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y in a future update.

However, not all vehicles may receive these new features due to hardware limitations.

Custom Wraps

Adding a vinyl wrap or coloured paint protection film (PPF) has become a popular aftermarket addition to Tesla vehicles. For many, Tesla’s existing Colorizer tool has allowed owners to virtually change the colour of their car in the vehicle’s screen visualization and the Tesla app to match.

Now Tesla is taking it a step further, with the ability to add custom wraps and license plate visualizations.

Since the Holiday Update hasn’t yet rolled out, we don’t have any real-life examples of how this will look, but Tesla has released a couple of images to preview the feature.

Timing and Potential Limitations

Although Tesla has confirmed these features are coming to other models, they did not commit to an exact release date, only saying it would be “in future updates.” But given that it will be in the 2024 Holiday Update for the Cybertruck, don’t expect to see it until sometime in 2025.

However, not all owners may receive this feature due to hardware limitations, specifically older models with the Intel Atom computers. We have already seen the limitations of this CPU when Tesla introduced improved vehicle visualizations earlier this year when this upgrade was limited to cars with the newer AMD Ryzen computer.

Even though this was released in April, and hackers showed the Intel computer could actually handle the visualization, Tesla still has not deployed it to these cars, so there’s no guarantee that every vehicle will support these new custom wrap and license plate features.

Tesla transitioned from the Intel Atom to AMD Ryzen CPU first with the Model S/X refresh in 2021, and then for the Model 3 and Model Y in early 2022.
