Tesla resumes FSD Beta roll out to new testers following NHTSA recall

Tesla has started sending out its Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta software to new testers, resuming a rollout that was paused for several months due to an over-the-air (OTA) recall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The rollout includes FSD Beta 11.3.6 on the latest 2023 software branch.

Back in February Tesla was made to issue an OTA recall for over 362,000 cars that had FSD Beta installed because the NHTSA said under certain conditions the software “could potentially infringe upon local traffic laws or customs, which could increase the risk of a collision if the driver does not intervene.” As part of the recall Tesla also had to halt the deployment of the software to new testers who had recently purchased or subscribed to the FSD Capability option.

While those concerns were addressed in the release of FSD Beta 11.3.2 sent to existing testers one month later, new testers were still being left out in the cold. That finally changed on Monday night with the release of 2023.12.10, which included FSD Beta 11.3.6. The release is also notable because it brings FSD Beta up to the latest non-beta branch.

According to the release notes shared on Twitter, this 11.3.6 update is the same as the other 11.3.6 software version on existing tester vehicles, which is built on 2022.45.15.

While it is great news to see Tesla resuming its FSD Beta rollout to new testers, this is not the version many people were expecting to see. According to a tweet from CEO Elon Musk last Friday, everyone was expecting to see 11.4.2 be released over the weekend. Without going into too much detail Musk said it was to include “some easy to fix bugs,” more specifically saying it “will address excess conservatism with narrow roads & with lane changes in heavy traffic.”

With the release of 11.3.6 to new testers, we should hopefully see 11.4 arrive soon, and it should also be on the latest 2023 software branch.
