Tesla releases Model Y Canopy in China

Tesla has released a new Model Y Canopy that takes the car camping experience to the next level. Unfortunately the new accessory is currently only available in China, but it may find its way to North America in the future.

According to the Tesla Shop listing in China, the canopy attaches to the rear of the electric SUV and provides 4.5 square meters, or a little more than 48 square feet of shade.

Tesla says the canopy is made from a silver-coated fabric that is waterproof against moderate to heavy rains, and provides UV50+ protection against the suns rays. It is also designed to withstand winds of level 4 to 5. The company doesn’t specify, but if they are referencing the Beaufort Wind Scale, that is about 20-40km/h or 12-25mph winds.

Although no instructions or video of the installation process is provided, Tesla says it can be easily installed, and that it attaches entirely to the car and requires no affixing to the ground.

While fully extended the canopy reaches 318.5cm by 165cm by 260cm. It also comes with a carrying bag that measures 68cm by 22cm by 12cm.

The Model Y Canopy is surprisingly affordable and is priced at just ¥699, or about C$133/US$98 (camping chairs in the photos are not included).

As we mentioned, it is unfortunately only available in China. Not all of Tesla’s products that it sells in China are also sold in North America, but we are hoping this is one of the ones that does eventually make its way to Canada and the US.
