Tesla pauses deliveries of 2025 Model Y in the US due to EPA hold

Tesla has temporarily paused deliveries of the 2025 Model Y in the United States as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalizes its range certifications. Neither Tesla nor the EPA have provided an estimated date or further details on when the delivery hold will be lifted.

Even though Tesla make continuous improvements to its vehicles throughout the year, the company does still conform to industry standards when it comes to model years. As part of this process of switching from a 2024 model year to a 2025 model year, Tesla has to get each of their vehicles’ range ratings recertified by the EPA. Typically, this happens without an impact to the customer, as the approval is often given before deliveries actually begin.

That isn’t the case for the 2025 Model Y. According to one of our readers who was expecting to take delivery of a Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) today, Monday October 28, 2024, their delivery is now on hold. Based on the information provided by the Delivery Advisor, the hold is on all all Model Y LR RWDs built from October 1, 2024. However, there is no information about when the hold will be lifted.

This pause is frustrating for those awaiting delivery, but it will be resolved in a relatively short amount of time based on previous experiences (more on that below). It also will not impact eligibility for the 0% financing deal, which has a requirement for delivery by December 31, 2024. If we had to guess, the hold will likely be lifted within a week or two.

As we mentioned, this isn’t the first time Tesla has faced delivery delays due to the EPA. Earlier this year, Tesla experienced a similar situation with the Model S and Model Y Performance, which also had a delivery hold to accommodate EPA range re-testing. These re-tests were required after changes were made to the EPA’s testing methods, which affected energy consumption results, and Tesla’s introduction of what it called “comfort and functionality improvements” that impacted battery usage.
