Tesla partially opens Sidney Supercharger [British Columbia]

Tesla has opened a new Supercharger in Sidney, British Columbia, however in an unusual turn of events, the company only opened half the stalls.

Back in August Tesla’s Charging team gave us an update on a large number of delayed Superchargers in Canada, providing estimated opening dates for over a dozen projects. Among them was a Supercharger under construction in Sidney, on Vancouver Island, which according to Tesla, was expected to open that same month. Six others were also expected to open in August.

August came and went and while five out of the seven Superchargers were opened, Sidney remained idle, along with Digby, Nova Scotia.

Now in mid-October Tesla has finally turned on the Sidney Supercharger, or at least half of it. Located the Sandown Shopping Center (10330 McDonald Park Road), 8 of the 16 stalls are now available to Tesla and non-Tesla owners.

While the Supercharger was officially turned on on Thursday, it is still not appearing in the mobile app or on the in-car navigation, likely because only half of it is functional. The 8 stalls that are not working are covered to avoid confusion.

Even though it does not appear in the app, we have been told it costs $0.20/kWh to plug in.

We don’t know the official reason for why only half of the Supercharger is functional, but it is likely the same issue that caused the opening to be delayed for three months. Hopefully Tesla is able to fix it soon, but 8 more Superchargers near Victoria is better than none.

In a recent update, Tesla revealed they are also planning another Supercharger on Vancouver Island in Tofino.
