Tesla Model Y seven-seater returns to Canada

Tesla has brought back the option to add a third row to the Model Y in Canada. This is yet another change to the Tesla lineup in Canada following the federal government implementing a tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs).

On October 1, 2024, the Canadian government added a 100% tariff on EVs imported into the country from China. This move had the biggest impact on Tesla, one of the only automakers currently making EVs in China and bringing them to Canada.

When October 1 rolled around, Tesla kept its vehicle lineup the same and did not raise prices, all but confirming they were switching their logistics and shipping cars from the US into Canada to avoid paying the tariffs.

On Friday this was confirmed, when Tesla added new Long Range (LR) Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variants of the Model 3 and Model Y to the Canadian configurator, both of which are made in the US.

Along with those changes, Tesla also added back the option to configure a seven-seat Model Y. According to the online Design Studio, the option costs $3,000, which is $1,000 less than when it was previously offered.

As before, the third row is only available on the LR All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant, and not on the entry-level LR RWD or the top of the line Performance. It can be added to either the All Black or White interior packages.

The seven-seat Model Y isn’t for everyone. Due to the sloping roofline of the electric SUV, headroom is limited when sitting in the third row. Leg room can also be cramped if you are 5’5″ or taller, even though the second row can slide forward to add extra room. Many suggest the ideal use case is for when you have younger children, or if you only plan on using the third row once in a while.
