The Tesla Model Y has once again finished the year as Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle, securing the title for a third consecutive year in 2025. The result comes despite growing competition from lower-priced Chinese EVs and a broader market shift toward hybrids, highlighting the Model Y’s continued appeal in one of the world’s most competitive right-hand-drive markets.
According to VFACTS (Vehicle Field Analytical and Characterization Technologies System) data, Tesla delivered 22,239 Model Y units over the full year, placing it 10th overall among all vehicles sold nationwide—an impressive showing in a market still dominated by pickup trucks, or utes as they are called in Australia, and SUVs from legacy automakers.
The broader Australian auto market set a new annual sales record in 2025, surpassing 1.24 million vehicles, with December providing the final push. While overall EV sales rebounded 13.1% year-over-year to 103,270 units, Tesla’s own volumes declined amid a surge from newer competitors, particularly Chinese brands such as BYD and GWM. Even so, the Model Y’s strong year-end performance—finishing tied for ninth in December sales among all models—helped secure its annual EV crown.
The Australian market illustrates a key trend: EV growth is no longer driven by a single brand. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids set records in 2025, and several new electric models entered the fray with aggressive pricing. Yet the Model Y continues to stand out in higher-priced medium SUV segments, where it led sales ahead of premium rivals.
