Tesla Model Y Refresh Launch Draws One-Word Response From Xiaomi CEO

Tesla officially unveiled the refresh of the Model Y in China yesterday, and while it has generated a lot of buzz among fans, it has also prompted a simple one-word response from Xiaomi’s CEO.

Following the unveiling, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun took to Weibo and responded to Tesla’s own Weibo post annoucning the new version of the electric SUV, “Updated Model Y, (you can) compare anyway” with a single word – “Ok.”

While Lei Jun didn’t elaborate further, his comment is a subtle yet confident nod toward Xiaomi’s upcoming YU7 SUV, suggesting he believes the mobile phone giant turned automaker’s second EV offering will be a worthy competitor to the Model Y refresh.

The YU7, slated for a mid-2025 launch, is being widely promoted to rival Tesla’s Model Y with its size and performance. Standing larger in all dimensions except height, the YU7 offers a wheelbase of 3,000 mm, compared to the Model Y’s 2,890 mm. This added length and width may appeal to families or those seeking a more spacious cabin.

The YU7 also boasts dual electric motors, delivering a combined peak power of 508 kW and a top speed of 253 km/h. However, Tesla’s advantage in weight—up to 413 kg lighter than Xiaomi’s SUV—translates to greater energy efficiency. Tesla claims its Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) achieves a CLTC range of 719 kilometers (447 miles) compared to Xiaomi’s yet-to-be-disclosed range.

Lei Jun’s response may also reflect Xiaomi’s growing confidence of their presence in the EV market. After delivering over 135,000 units of its inaugural SU7 electric sedan in 2024, Xiaomi EV is fast becoming a household name in China.

The YU7 and refreshed Model Y will undoubtedly go head-to-head when Xiaomi’s SUV hits the market in June or July 2025. Until then, Lei Jun’s “Ok” serves as a teaser of Xiaomi’s confidence in its EV lineup.
