Tesla Model Y Performance customers in the United States are beginning to experience unexpected delivery delays. At first many would-be owners were left puzzled and disappointed after their long-awaited cars suddenly disappeared from their Tesla app’s scheduled delivery screens, however, it appears the company has a good reason for the delay.
Initially deliveries were expected to begin yesterday, December 3 2025, but multiples customers reported receiving messages from Tesla explaining that their vehicles have technically arrived at Delivery Centers, but that the car was no longer ready for delivery.
The message went so far as to say their original VIN may no longer be the one they receive, and that Tesla was “actively working with our factory team to build you a new Model Y.”

Those messages didn’t contain much information as to the reason behind the delay, but a later message revealed a hold has been put in place due to an issue discovered after production related to an unspecified piece of safety equipment.
“It looks like your car has arrived, but there’s a hold on it to ensure that some safety equipment was installed correctly at the factory. Once the part arrives and the service is completed, your Tesla app will notify you when it’s ready to schedule pickup.”
Although Tesla hasn’t issued a detailed public statement yet beyond the in-app messages, the consistent wording in those messages suggests that a component tied to vehicle safety did not meet installation requirements at the factory. Before releasing the vehicles into customer hands, Tesla is performing pre-delivery checks and possible retrofits to ensure everything is compliant and functioning properly.
Additionally, the messages indicate at least some vehicles might need to be replaced entirely rather than repaired on-site.
At this time it is still unclear when deliveries will resume for these affected customers. With Tesla noting that a “part” needs to arrive first, the delay could range from days to several weeks depending on supply availability and the scale of the rework required.
While the situation is frustrating, Tesla is keeping safety a priority and holding vehicles back to make sure everything is correct rather than rushing them out the door.
