Tesla Model Y Performance deliveries in Canada expected soon, but not for everyone

Tesla is expected to finally start handing over the first Model Y Performance vehicles to customers in Canada soon, possibly as early as this weekend. The first deliveries are expected to take place in Ontario and Quebec, which makes sense considering the proximity to Halifax, where the vehicles arrived from Germany.

However, it has important implications for customers further west and those hoping to transfer their Full-Self Driving (FSD) software to their new car, those hoping to get Autopilot as a standard feature, and those hoping to secure the new black headliner and larger 16″ screen.

As we reported last week on X, the latest shipment of Model Y cars from Giga Berlin arrived in Halifax on March 4, carrying Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), Long Range (LR), and Performance variants. Those vehicles have now made their way to Delivery Centers, and while we have yet to hear of delivery appointments being schedule, estimated delivery windows are narrowing.

Based on information shared with us by several of our readers in Ontario and Quebec, delivery windows for Model Y Performance orders are now as early as March 15, or this Sunday, and stretching into next week (March 20).

Interestingly, some of these deliveries are expected to include the new black headliner and larger 16″ screen, something that we weren’t expecting to see on this shipment of vehicles from Germany.

For customers in British Columbia and Alberta, the story isn’t as positive. According to reports on social media, delivery dates for customers in those regions have been pushed back to a May or June timeframe. Adding to their frustrations, advisors are informing customers that their vehicles will likely still have the grey headliner, even though deliveries of the new black headliner are expected in Ontario.

As we noted above, this has important implications. If a customer was hoping to transfer FSD, it is now unclear if that will still be possible. When Tesla changed the terms of the transfer deal, they said they would still honour the transfer if delivery was delayed due to an issue caused by Tesla, but only if the delivery still took place in April. With a May or June delivery, it is unclear at this time if the company will still honour the transfer.

Adding to it, some customers are thinking of passing on their first VIN assignment to get the black headliner in a subsequent shipment. However, this impacts whether you will get Autopilot as a standard feature. According to information from Sales Advisors, delaying your delivery qualifies as a change in your order, and Autopilot will no longer be included.

Taken all together, the situation around Model Y Performance deliveries in Canada is messy to say the least. Many customers now find themselves weighing several competing priorities: securing FSD through the transfer program, keeping Autopilot included, or waiting for the newest interior upgrades.

Tesla has not publicly clarified how it plans to handle these situations, particularly for customers whose deliveries are pushed beyond April through no fault of their own. Until more shipments arrive and delivery appointments begin rolling out more widely across the country, questions will likely remain for many Model Y Performance buyers.
