Tesla Model Y outsells all other cars in Taiwan in December, 3X more than closest competitor

With the start of a new quarter countries around the world are starting to release their December sales figures, and Tesla is continuing to dominate the results in markets big and small. On the smaller end of the scale is Taiwan, where the Model Y was the best selling vehicle last month, and the competition wasn’t even close.

According to local sales figures the Model Y topped the charts with 3,598 sales in December, more than 3 times the amount of the second place Toyota RAV4 which had 1,162 sales in the same time period. In fact, the Model Y had more sales than the next four closest competitors combined, which happened to also include the Model 3 in 5th place with 475 sales.

The dominating performance by the Model Y in Taiwan happened in the first month the electric SUV was available, and deliveries didn’t even start until December 5, 2022. On that day Tesla kicked off deliveries in the country with a special delivery event in Taiwan, handing over cars made at Giga Berlin, and not Giga Shanghai despite its much closer proximity.

The Long Range variant in Taiwan is priced at NT$2,299,900, or about $98,000 CAD or $72,500 USD, a slight premium over prices in North America. Opting for the top-of-the-line Performance variant will set you back NT$2,599,900, or about $110,600 CAD or $82,000 USD.

Taiwan isn’t the only market where the Tesla outsold internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to claim the top spot in December. It also happened in the UK, where the Model Y was also the third most popular car in 2022, and Australia where the Model 3 outsold the Toyota Camry to become the best selling midsize sedan, a title which the Camry had held for 28 years straight.
