Tesla appears to be delaying some Model S and Model X deliveries, just as the company has started production of the two flagship vehicles with some long-awaited upgrades. This delivery delay is separate from another one we told you about last month related to issues with the EPA.
Last week we told you that Tesla was preparing to begin production of the Model S and Model X with some notable upgrades, the biggest of which is the addition of a front bumper camera. Along with the front bumper camera, Tesla is also adding ambient lighting to the interior, a feature that is already available on the Cybertruck, new Model 3, and the slightly refreshed Model Y built at Giga Shanghai.
Just as soon as it was reported that Tesla was adding these features, as well as a few other upgrades, all of which have yet to be officially announced, the company has started delaying some deliveries by several weeks, according to third-party companion app Teslascope, who first reported on the upcoming changes.
We’ve received just under a dozen mentions and messages today that delivery estimations for Model S and X have been pushed back by a few weeks (at a minimum).

This does not appear to be effecting all orders at this time. https://t.co/2ott8XZ9ww
While Tesla has not provided these customers with an explanation, it is likely due to these upcoming changes and Tesla adjusting production to integrate the changes to the production lines to accommodate the new parts and upgrades, and not due to the EPA certification issues we told you about last month.
In those cases, deliveries of only two specific variants, the Model Y Performance, and the Model S Long Range, had been getting pushed back for over a month while the company waited for additional testing to have those two vehicles certified by the EPA. The delivery holds on those two vehicles have now been lifted, according to several customers who confirmed with Drive Tesla they were finally able to take delivery of their cars last week.
