Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Join China’s Rural EV Promotion Campaign for the First Time

Tesla has been added to China’s official 2025 rural electric vehicle (EV) promotion list for the first time, with the Model 3 and Model Y selected as part of a government-backed campaign to boost EV adoption outside major cities.

The list, released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and five other departments this week, identifies eligible electric and hybrid vehicles that qualify for promotional support and potential incentives in rural areas.

This is the first time Tesla has been featured in the annual campaign, which has been running since at least 2020 and is designed to promote the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles in rural areas across China. A total of 124 models were selected for the 2025 edition, an increase from 99 in 2024, which featured top-selling vehicles primarily from Chinese automakers like BYD. (via Reuters)

The inclusion is significant for Tesla. It potentially unlocks a sizable new market segment by making the Model 3 and Model Y eligible for rural subsidies and local promotional support. These incentives can lower the total cost of ownership and make Tesla’s vehicles more accessible to residents in smaller cities and countryside communities, where affordability and reliability are major factors in purchase decisions.

China remains Tesla’s second-largest market globally, but sales growth has recently faced challenges due to domestic competition. Local brands such as BYD, NIO, and Li Auto have introduced a steady stream of cost-effective and feature-rich EVs, particularly aimed at non-urban buyers.

Tesla’s participation in this government campaign may help counterbalance these pressures by broadening its appeal and increasing brand visibility in underserved regions.
