Tesla makes an important update to the mobile app to reduce battery drain in vehicles

Tesla has updated its mobile app, and included a significant change that will help reduce drain in their vehicle’s batteries.

One of the big perks of being a Tesla owner is the convenience of the mobile app. Not only does it allow you to ditch your car keys, it also gives you the ability to access a number of your vehicle’s functions from your phone, like cooling it down on a hot summer’s day, or turning on Sentry Mode and watching a live video feed from your car’s cameras.

There was however one drawback. Each time you opened the app it would “wake up” your vehicle, resulting in battery drain in the vehicle. This amount was not huge, but repeated opening of the app would cause you to lose some percentage of your battery.

Now Tesla has made a significant change to its mobile app to help reduce this problem. On Wednesday Tesla released version 4.35.0 of the mobile app on the iOS App Store, and according to the release notes the app will only wake up the vehicle when you send it a command.

With this change, when you open your app, it will now display a message saying how long your vehicle has been asleep for. If you send a command, like trying to turn on HVAC, or simply swipe down to refresh, the app will wake up the car.

Based on our testing there is a period where the car stays awake, so if you re-open the app within a few minutes the car will still be awake. We’re not sure how long this period is, but it appears to be at least 5 minutes.
