Tesla lands Megapack contract for Chile’s 228 MW solar project

Tesla has been awarded the contract to supply Megapacks for a 228 mega-watt (MW) project in Chile.

Energy producer Colbun has tapped Tesla to supply Megapacks for its solar project in Camarones. The 228 MW plant in Camarones district will tie to a 912 MWh/day battery energy storage installation. It is the company’s first large-scale energy storage project and one of the largest in the South American country.

According to a press release by Colbun, the solar facility is backed by a $260 million investment and will generate 200 jobs at its peak. When it enters production in mid-2026, it will supply clean energy to more than 55,000 homes.

Each Megapack stores over 3.9 MWh and will power about 3,600 homes for an hour.

Tesla’s energy storage business continues to expand. In November, the company celebrated the production of its 10,000th Megapack at the Lathrop factory. Some of the batteries will power two projects worth $200 million in Australia. Elsewhere in the Down Under, Neoen has begun operating the country’s largest battery installation powered by Tesla’s Megapacks.
