If you are thinking of buying a Model 3 or Model Y in Solid Black paint, you might want to pull the trigger sooner rather than later as Tesla is preparing to increase the price of the paint option next week. The price increase will only impact customers in the US.
Tesla’s Solid Black paint option has had a varied history over the years. It used to be the standard paint option and included in the base price of the vehicle, but that changed in 2019 when CEO Elon Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Solid Black was becoming one of the premium colours with a price tag of US$1,000.
Starting next month, Tesla will charge $1000 for color black (same price as silver)

Since then the price has also increased to US$1,500, and starting next week it is going to get more expensive again, but only in the US.
According to one of our readers who is close to buying a Model Y, they were contacted by their Advisor to warn them of the upcoming price change that will see Solid Black go from US$1,500 to US$2,000. This price change will make it go from once being free to being the most expensive paint option, along with Multi-Coat Red that is also US$2,000.
We are not sure of the exact date the price change will take effect, but Tesla typically updates their pricing on Thursday nights. We have also confirmed the price change will not be coming to Canada, at least for now.
While Solid Black is also available on the Model S/X, this change will not impact those vehicles as all of the paint options, including the all-new Stealth Grey that was introduced this week, are included in the base price.
