Tesla’s Cybertruck has already made up significant ground in the electric pickup truck market. We already know it was the best-selling electric pickup in Q2, despite deliveries only starting in earnest in Q1.
Now new registration data shows it also outsold the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T in May 2024, combined.
According to data from S&P Global Mobility, the Cybertruck racked up 3,907 registrations in May 2024, making it the most popular electric pickup for the month. In comparison, the Ford F-150 Lightning had 2,353 registrations, while the Rivian R1T managed 1,237 registrations, for a combined total of 3,590 units, 317 units behind the Cybertruck. Not only did it outsell the R1T and Lightning combined, its May registrations were enough to place the Cybertruck fifth among all electric vehicles (EVs) for May.
While the R1T and the Lightning are the next most popular electric pickup trucks, there are a couple of others on the market. General Motors accumulated 668 Chevrolet Silverado EVs registrations, while GMC saw 359 Hummer EVs registered in the same period.
While the Cybertruck’s success in May is notable, year-to-date data reveals that Ford still holds the top spot for electric pickup registrations with 13,443 units, compared to Tesla’s 7,879 and Rivian’s 3,881. This order likely won’t stay this way for long as Tesla continues to ramp Cybertruck production and whittle its way through the order backlog, which is at least 1 million people deep, or could be as much as 2 million according to crowd-sourced data.
According to the most recent update, Giga Texas is producing around 1,300 Cybertrucks per week as of June 2024.
