Tesla Cybertruck Range Extender delayed to mid-2025, range expectations lowered

Tesla has announced the Cybertruck Range Extender battery has been delayed again, this time to mid-2025. At the same time, the company has adjusted how much extra range you can expect to receive from the optional accessory.

Back in 2019 Tesla announced that the Cybertruck would offer a range of up to 500 miles (804km) on a single charge. This range would make the electric pickup a strong competitor in the truck market, particularly for those who use trucks for towing. However, when production began in 2023, the actual range fell short of this goal, with the highest trim, the tri-motor variant, offering 320 miles (515km) of range.

To compensate for this, Tesla also announced the Range Extender, a separate battery pack that could be installed in the truck’s bed and boost the Cybertruck’s range to 470 miles (756km), getting it closer to the originally promised 500 miles.

When it was first announced, the Range Extender was supposed to be available in late 2024, but a few months ago Tesla pushed that back to early 2025. Now Tesla has updated its timeline again, pushing production back to mid-2025. Additionally, Tesla has lowered the expected boost in range down to “445+ miles” (716km+) according to an update to the Cybertruck Design Studio spotted by Electrek.

Interestingly, the updated timeline and range figure is only on the US version of the website. The Canadian version still says production will begin in early 2025, and that it will still offer 755+ total km of range. We assume Tesla has just forgotten to update the Canadian configurator, and we won’t be getting a better version of the Range Extender, and earlier, than in the US.

As you can see, the Range Extender comes with a hefty price tag, an estimated $22,000 in Canada or $16,000 in the US. Once installed it will take up about one-third of the Cybertruck’s bed space, limiting the truck’s utility, particularly for owners who need the full bed for carrying cargo. Additionally, the Range Extender is a semi-permanent installation, meaning it will require professional installation and removal by Tesla Service Technicians, so you will have to decide of the trade-off between increased range and reduced bed space is worth it for you.
