Tesla China beats another record with 70,847 sales in December 2021, almost reaching 500K for the year

Tesla closed out the year in China with a bang, selling a record 70,847 cars made at Giga Shanghai in December 2021.

The official figures from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) show the majority of those, 70,602, were sold domestically in China.

As is typical with the final month of a quarter in which Tesla prioritizes sales for the domestic market, just 245 vehicles were exported out of the country.

With such an impressive performance in December, Tesla came within inches of selling half a million cars made at Giga Shanghai.

In the twelve-month period 484,130 cars were delivered from the factory.

Cementing its status as the automaker’s primary vehicle export hub, more than 160,000 of those were sent to other countries around the world. (via @42how_)

Tesla’s figures should be even stronger in 2022. Starting last month, the company is spending $188 million to expand production at the factory, all without constructing new buildings or facilities.

Instead, they will be launching the second phase of their production line optimization project, which is scheduled to be complete in April 2022.
