Tesla has started installing new and redesigned aero covers on Cybertrucks, nearly six months after the company stopped including them on new deliveries.
Back in late January Tesla started delivering Cybertrucks to new owners with one piece of standard equipment missing, the aero covers, which are added to increase efficiency. As it turns out that extra efficiency came with a drawback, as the Cybertruck’s aero covers were coming into contact with the tire’s sidewall, rubbing against it and leaving visible wear marks.
While it didn’t present an immediate safety danger, Tesla pulled the aero covers and stopped including them on new deliveries until a new version could be developed.
Despite recent rumours suggesting Tesla wasn’t going to be releasing a new version, the company has done just that this week. According to a Cybertruck owner on Reddit, he was called in to his local Service Center to have the new aero covers installed, also sharing a picture of the redesigned cover.
As you can see in the photos below, Tesla has been able to maintain the original design. The spokes of the original aero covers extended well past the rim, whereas with the new design they are shorter by an inch or two. You can tell they are shorter as you can still see the indent on the sidewall, which was designed to accommodate the original, longer spoke design.
The center cap of the new covers also appears to be indented compared to the original version, and the overall cover also appears to be slightly flatter, although this could just be the lighting of the picture.
Since this is the first report of an owner receiving the new aero covers, we should see more in the coming days and weeks as Tesla is able to produce them and ship them to Service Centers across the US. We should also then see how they are performing, and if they are solve the original problem.
