Tesla finally launched the Project Highland Model 3 this week, but conspicuously absent from the release was the Performance model. Tesla did not explain why only the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range (LR) variants were launched, but Model 3 Performance reservation holders in Australia are waiting for clarity as the EV maker has cancelled existing orders for the top of the line model.
The Model 3 Performance reservation holders have received messages from Tesla, confirming the cancellation was official. One prospective owner on the Tesla Owner Australia Facebook group revealed they got the following message, “Unfortunately, Performance is not currently available, and we are unable to complete your Model 3 order.”
Tesla Australia asked their buyers to pick another vehicle. It also promised to priority-match their orders. The available models include the Model Y Performance and the new Model 3 RWD and Long Range.
The order cancellations have raised doubts about the future of the Model 3 Performance. It is possible that the model is getting permanently canceled or will be re-introduced at a later stage. Buyers, however, would appreciate official information to be able to set their expectations.
The Highland project refreshed the Model 3 with some exterior changes to make it appear more modern. However, one of the major interior changes is the addition of an extra screen for backseat riders to access settings and entertainment. US and Canadian customers will have to wait for the new Model 3 to become available in their region.
