The Lion Electric Company announced this week it has received a conditional order for 1,000 electric school buses from Student Transportation Canada (STC).
If the order goes through, it would be the single largest order for electric school buses ever received by the Quebec-base company.
It would also make STC the single largest operator of zero-emission school buses in North America.
The new buses would replace the company’s aging fleet of diesel buses. According to Lion Electric the fleet would eliminate up to 23,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions each year.
No financial details were disclosed. The deal will be finalized once Student Transportation Canada receives “satisfactory” non-repayable grants from Infrastructure Canada’s Zero Emission Public Transit Fund.
As part of the program, the federal government has committed $2.75 billion over five years to enhance and electrify public transit systems.
Lion Electric said deliveries are expected to begin in 2022 and will continue through to the first half of 2026.
