Rolls-Royce’s all-electric coupe, Spectre, is being put through its paces in a global testing campaign. The car is now close to accumulating 2 million km of testing on the road.
According to the luxury brand, this test is the most extensive in its 118 years of automobile design and manufacturing. However, Rolls-Royce says it is far from done.
The car is currently passing through extremely hot weather tests in Augrabies and Franschhoek in South Africa. The two places offer some of the finest summer weather conditions, with the former dry and extremely hot and the latter humid and more Mediterranean style.
Engineers are gathering data on the car’s performance to further refine the hardware and software. Rolls-Royce said the rigorous testing is necessary to meet the high expectation of its clientele by transferring its ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ reputation to its electric offering.
Rolls-Royce says the regenerative-breaking system has benefitted from over 1500 hours of testing, feedback, and refinement. It has also refined the anti-roll stabilization feature, color quantity, interior brightness when the door is opened, suspension, etc.
Still to come is the fine-tuning of the 17-speaker audio system, which will fall in the final 500,000 km lap of the testing regimen. Rolls-Royce plans to put the car through 2.5 million km before finalizing the development. It has already completed winter testing in Arjeplog, Sweden, where temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius.
CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said, “Spectre has already secured its place as the most anticipated Rolls-Royce in history. This remarkable and transformative motor car represents the beginning of the marque’s bold electric era as well as our unquestionable technological leadership of the super-luxury space. Equally, this vast, ambitious and demanding testing process symbolises our promise to ensure Spectre is undoubtedly a Rolls-Royce first.”
Rolls-Royce is considering expanding the first production run of the Spectre thanks to high demand. Buyers will get a redesigned Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament.
