Rivian has announced a halt in the production of its electric delivery vans for Amazon. The production pause, caused by a shortage of critical components, is only temporary, and Rivian remains optimistic that it will recover any lost production in the coming months.
The latest production hiccup occurred at Rivian’s manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, where the company produces all its vehicles, including the commercial vans. While Rivian has declined to specify which parts are in short supply, this issue represents just one of many supply chain disruptions the automaker has faced over the past two years.
Amazon, which holds a 16% stake in Rivian, is the EV maker’s largest customer for the electric delivery vans. The e-commerce giant placed an original order for 100,000 of the Rivian vans as part of its broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions in its delivery operations.
Despite the current production halt, Amazon has stated that it does not expect this short-term issue to have a significant impact on its delivery timelines. (via Reuters)
Rivian has assured stakeholders that the production of its other vehicles, the R1S and R1T, remain unaffected by the parts shortage.
