Rivian has issued a recall affecting 17,260 of its 2025 R1S SUVs and R1T pickup trucks in the United States due to a headlight defect that may reduce visibility in cold temperatures. The recall, registered as NHTSA Recall No. 25V-085, impacts vehicles manufactured between April 29, 2024, and February 3, 2025.
Transport Canada has not yet issued a similar recall.
Issue and Safety Risks
According to the NHTSA recall notice, the affected vehicles may have been equipped with incorrectly configured headlights due to a supplier issue. Under cold weather conditions, the low beam headlights may fail to illuminate at vehicle startup, which could compromise visibility and increase the risk of a crash.
Rivian says 8% of the recalled vehicles are estimated to have the defect. However, the automaker has stated that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue.
Affected Models and Production Dates
The recall impacts the following vehicles:
- 2025 Rivian R1S SUV (produced between April 29, 2024 – February 3, 2025)
- 2025 Rivian R1T Pickup Truck (produced between July 10, 2024 – February 3, 2025)
Owners of affected vehicles may experience a warning message on their driver display stating: “Low beam lights not working. Service low beams soon.”
Remedy and Owner Notification
Rivian has announced that it will replace the headlamp control modules free of charge for all affected vehicles. Unlike Transport Canada, which notifies affected customers by email, Rivian will have to mail notifications to affected owners on or before March 28, 2025.
The recall comes as Rivian reported its first gross profit in Q4 2024, a significant milestone for the EV automaker. Despite this achievement, the company also projected a decline in deliveries for 2025.
