Rivian R1T totalled after crashing into pole and catching fire

There is one less Rivian R1T on the road today following a single vehicle crash in Irvine, California late Wednesday night.

The crash took place just after the I-405 off ramp on Sand Canyon Avenue at around 9:54pm.

According to the California Highway Patrol incident log, at least one witness said the R1T exited the freeway at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and hit the traffic pole. (via County News)

The crash resulted in the electric truck catching fire.

Fortunately the driver was able to exit the vehicle uninjured, and declined medical assistance on scene.

Video shortly after the accident took place shows the R1T, still with temporary tags, was heavily damaged and a complete loss.

This is the first known crash that has resulted in a totalled R1T. A pre-production prototype was involved in an accident in September last year.
