Rivian produces its 100,000th EV

Rivian has hit a significant milestone by producing its 100,000th electric vehicle (EV), a little over two and a half years after their first EV rolled off the production line in Normal, Illinois.

Rivian’s journey to this milestone began with the launch of its first electric pickup, the R1T, in September 2021, marking it as the first of its kind in the US market. The introduction of the R1S SUV followed soon thereafter, expanding Rivian’s portfolio and its appeal to a broader audience.

Now two years and six months later, Rivian has produced 100,000 of their EVs. The production milestone was announced by CEO RJ Scaringe on the social media platform X, with a picture of the 100,000th vehicle, a Glacier White R1S SUV.

While Rivian just built its 100,000th EV, the company is shutting down production at its plant this month for upgrades to incorporate new technologies and manufacturing practices. These changes are expected to be for new battery packs and other internal upgrades to the R1T and R1S to simplify production and reduce costs.

In the first quarter of 2024, Rivian produced a total of around 13,980 vehicles and delivered 13,588 of those to customers. The company is hoping to build another 57,000 EVs in 2024, keeping their production flat compared to 2023 when the company built 57,232 EVs.

Rivian plans to broaden its lineup with the introduction of the R2, an electric SUV set for production in early 2026. When the R2 was unveiled last month, the company surprised everyone by revealing two more future models, the R3 and R3X. These upcoming models aim to cater to a wider range of consumers by offering more affordable options and performance-focused vehicles.

The announcement of the R2 model appeared to prove popular, with over 68,000 reservations placed for the compact electric SUV in less than 24 hours.
