Ontario cancels Starlink contract amidst US Tariffs

Doug Ford, fresh off a majority victory in the Ontario Provincial Election, has announced that the province is canceling its $100 million contract with Starlink.

The move comes as 25% tariffs were enacted overnight on Canadian goods entering the United States.

Ford had previously threatened to cancel the Starlink contract, which was meant to increase connectivity in Northern Ontario, if tariffs were enacted.

When asked about the cost associated with canceling the Starlink agreement, Ford said:

If they come out and sue us — so be it. I want to inflict as much pain as we possibly can until we get to a deal.

He went on to say this about Musk:

“Isn’t it ironic that he got educated, part of his education, was at Queen’s? And he’s attacking the country and the province that gave him the opportunity to go to Queen’s University,” Ford said. “They should be embarrassed that he went to Queen’s — he should be embarrassed to attack the people that took care of him.”

In addition to the Starlink contract cancellation, Ford is also imposing the following:

  • Instructing the LCBO to wipe American-made alcohol from its shelves and online store.
  • Imposing a 25% surcharge on electricity sent to the United States.
  • Threatened to cut off power altogether to the United States starting in April and;
  • Surcharge or cut critical mineral exports to the United States, including nickel.
